The Eternaut season 2 release date speculation and latest news
The creepy sci-fi drama will return – but probably not anytime soon.

The Eternaut fans can breath a sigh of release as the apocalyptic sci-fi drama has officially been renewed for a second season on Netflix – but there's a catch.
Not only could it be two years or more until the next chapter is ready for release on the streaming platform, but also the upcoming episodes look set to be the show's last.
While The Eternaut has been a major critical and commercial hit, the comic books it is based on consist of only two volumes – and it appears that this adaptation intends to follow suit.
As producer Matías Mosteirin said (via Deadline): "We believe that we will manage to close the whole story in a beautiful way, with probably eight more episodes."
The series follows a group of survivors as they attempt to survive a deadly snowstorm in Buenos Aires, while investigating the mysterious origin of the extreme event – with bold sci-fi ideas eventually coming into play.
So, here's everything we know so far about the future of The Eternaut.
The Eternaut season 2 release date speculation

The Eternaut has been renewed for a second season on Netflix, although fans will have a long wait on their hands for the next set of episodes.
The news was officially confirmed by the streamer on Tuesday 6th May, after the Argentine sci-fi drama grew into an international hit, reaching the platform's top 10 most-watched shows in dozens of countries.
This includes number one finishes in Spain, Italy, Turkey, Brazil and, unsurprisingly, Argentina, for which The Eternaut has been hailed as a landmark production for the nation's television industry.
Previously, star Ricardo Darín had appeared confident that Netflix would renew the project, telling Vogue Spain (translated from Spanish) that "out of contractual and moral obligation, we have to make the second part – it's already agreed upon".
He continued: "This starts one way and ends another. We have to get there. People are wondering, the fans, what that great final battle on River Plate's pitch will be like. We'll see if I make it, even if it's in a wheelchair, but we'll get there."
As for when The Eternaut season 2 could premiere on Netflix, that news is less positive: Deadline reports that the next episodes "won't land soon" as they could spend up to two years in development and production.
That's based on the cycle for the first season, which took eight months to film and spent an entire year in post, polishing up those striking visual effects among other important bells and whistles.
Of course, that doesn't even take into account the time required to write the next chapter, with producer Matías Mosteirin indicating to Deadline that scripts are not yet written for the planned second season.
With all that in mind, we'd estimate that The Eternaut season 2 won't launch on Netflix any sooner than summer 2027.

What could happen in The Eternaut season 2?

The Eternaut season 2 will likely derive at least some of its storyline from the second volume of the source material by Héctor Germán Oesterheld and Francisco Solano López.
First published in 1975, the synopsis (translated from Spanish, via Good Reads) teases that the time travel plot spans "from 1959 to the post-apocalyptic future of Buenos Aires" and "sheds light on a period that left many open wounds and a ceaseless demand for justice".
Speaking to Deadline, Netflix's Vice President of Latin American content Francisco Ramos said that The Eternaut season 2 is "going to dig into a lot of sci-fi concepts that were just pointed out in season 1 – and they are going to be fully blown".
Meanwhile, producer Matías Mosteirin teased that season 2 will bring the show to a "beautiful" conclusion, with the hope being that they can end on a slightly longer run of eight episodes (compared to the first, which had only six).
"We feel that, artistically, that is the cycle to we need to sustain the mystique and the adventure of making the show," said Mosteirin. "We want to challenge ourselves in the second season just as we challenged ourselves in the first one.
"We want to go for more, technically and creatively. We want to use all the knowledge we gained to do things on the second season that we didn't manage to do on the first."
