Based on the Japanese light novel series by Natsu Hyūga, the anime series takes place in Tang-dynasty, China and blends the often high-stakes of a historical drama with mystery storytelling. It follows the adventures of a young girl named Maomao who, after getting kidnapped, begins her new life as an indentured servant at the Imperial Palace. However, her previous role as an apprentice apothecary soon thrusts her into the limelight.

In her new role, Maomao ends up befriending an eunuch named Jinshi. Together, they begin using her apothecary training to solve medical mysteries around the palace. They'll also have to contend with political conspiracies, dangerous rumours, and even assassination attempts. With such a premise, it's not hard to see why The Apothecary Diaries feels so distinctive and is a breath of fresh air currently running.

It should be noted that there was a brief delay of one week between episode 18 and episode 19, hence why episode 19 will air on the 23rd of May instead of the predicted 16th of May.
